A positive mental attitude is the mindset of believing in yourself, your abilities, your job, your company and your clients.
- Your mental state controls your entire life’s outcome.
- A positive mental attitude must have a foundation of belief. Without belief, a positive mental attitude is merely HOT AIR. It exists for a moment, but goes away under pressure.
- A positive mental attitude is contagious! Others will follow your example.
- High performers remember to push their internal buttons during stressful times to activate a positive mental attitude. What internal thought will trigger your positive thought process? Many times you can create a phrase to say to yourself such as:
- “I CAN do it!”
- “Power Through!”
- “This is for my family!”
- “Rock and Roll!”
- “Just Do It!”
- When life gets you down and you feel your attitude start to slip, make a mental list of all the good, wonderful, and meaningful things in your life. List your accomplishments and dreams. Review positive feedback from clients, co-workers and management.
- This mindset will help you embrace the positives of every day. It will improve your disposition, helping you gain respect and reach your goals.

When you find yourself fighting to maintain a positive mental attitude, separate your emotions from a crisis to regain balance and objectivity.
- S.O.S. is a visualization exercise to create a “Separation of Space” between an intense situation and your emotional behavior.
- It is usually during an intense situation when people become reactive, make mistakes and generally have a negative attitude.
- Extreme emotional “highs” and “lows” can cause you to lose your objectivity and control. You need to remain balanced and focused.
- When you feel your emotions rising in a given situation:
- STOP and take a breath.
- Mentally “Send out an S.O.S.” by separating your emotional behavior from the situation.
- View the situation objectively and openly.
- Choose the appropriate behavior, technique or strategy to manage through the situation successfully. Think of the basics that always hold true to leading you to success.
- The S.O.S. technique works by focusing your positive energy on a specific situation vs. allowing the stress to take hold of your attitude and behavior.
- S.O.S. keeps you centered and allows you to make stronger, more objective decisions. S.O.S. helps you think in a proactive and positive manner.
Keep your head in the game with a positive attitude and enjoy the ride!
