Broadcast Your Vision to Your Team

Originally published in Dartnell's Sales & Marketing Executive Report

Mark David believes that the most important assets of any company are the people who work there. That makes the role of "Coach" especially important to any organization, because it is the coach who grows and develops the team members. That, in turn, allows the company to grow and develop.

In his book Coaching Illustrated, David presents 30 basic principles of successful coaching that can help you establish a solid managing foundation. Included with each principle is a definition and a real-world example to help the reader learn, understand and implement each one.

The first principle David lists stresses the importance of conveying your vision of success clearly to your team. "Winning coaches start each 'season' with a vision in mind," he writes. To ensure that your team understands your vision, make sure it's clearly defined and communicated often, on a daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly basis.

"When people refer to everyone being on the same page, it means that everyone understands the team vision and his part in achieving it," David writes. "This condition is extremely motivating and is the core of building a high-performance team."

David suggests that you broadcast your vision by pre-planning a quarterly marketing campaign. Here are some ways to implement it:
  1. Leave voice mail messages reiterating the vision and update team members on their progress toward achieving it. Congratulate them on their efforts and challenge them further.

  2. E-mail information with team members' successes and current events that relate to the vision.

  3. Create a monthly newsletter that refocuses the team on the vision- recognizing outstanding contributions, sacrifices, etc.

  4. Interview customers and create audio/video recordings to share with the team. This gives your team members a larger scope to which they can relate their efforts.

  5. Schedule regular team meetings to discuss the vision and each team member's efforts to achieving it.
